Institute of Texas Cultures
"... dedicated to the enhancement of historical and multicultural understanding ..."
We spent an afternoon here immersing ourselves in Texas history. A treat for us was a resident anthropologist's lecture on Indian cultures of Texas. He talked about the differences between nomadic tribes and agriculture-based tribes. Tools, utensils, weapons, shelters and lifestyles were displayed and explained.
A unique film comprised of hundreds of Texas history scenes is shown on a high domed ceiling, and viewers sit on the floor to watch. Images from a variety of cultures and time periods combine to create the message that the parts make up the whole.
The point was well made that Texas, like America, is a melting pot of cultures and there is much more to Texas than cowboys and Indians.
