Encounters

Lion Country Since the 1950s, visitors to Big Bend National Park have reported more than 1,000 sightings of mountain lions. While over 90% of these sightings were along park roads, encounters with lions on park trails also occur. Of course, some members of our family were intent on seeing a mountain lion, so off we went hiking Burro Mesa Pouroff, where a "Danger Lion Sighting" sign had recently been posted. It was a fairly short hike around dusk, prime time for a lion sighting. The end of the trail was a beautiful canyon wall. We took this picture.

We all carried sticks and rocks as darkness approached... but as you can see, we didn't find a mountain lion!

During our stay we saw many javelinas, coyotes, mule deer, roadrunners, and more.
